ABOUT JOHOR BAHRU

The name “Johor” comes from the Arabic word “jauhar,” which means “precious stones.” The city’s name shows how much Arab traders affected the city as they searched for spices. The history of the current city of Johor can be traced back to the time of Dato’ Temenggong Daing Ibrahim. He was the son of Temenggong Abdul Rehman, who was a grandson of Sultan Abdul Jalil 4 in Johor. In 1855, Sultan Ali of Johor and the British who lived in Singapore signed a deal that gave control of Johor to Dato Temenggong Daing Ibrahim.
